Sunshine Ceramics NatWest Pigs -
2007 Special Silver Edition

NEW 2007 SPECIAL EDITION SILVER NATWEST PIGS

The NatWest Piggy Bank story started in 1982 when Sunshine Ceramics were commissioned by NatWest to design and manufacture the original set of 5 pigs. Only 400 complete sets of the pigs were produced for distribution to the bank’s branches before starting full production of Woody, the first piggy bank. The original 400 sets are very rare as they were never available to the public and they rarely, if ever, come up for sale. The tremendous appeal of the pigs resulted in Wade eventually taking over the mass production of Woody and the remaining 4 members of the family.

December 2007 is the 25th anniversary of the original pigs and to mark the occasion a special limited edition set is being produced by the Paul Cardew Pottery. Paul was the designer of the original set of pigs at Sunshine Ceramics and when production was transferred to Wade, he retained the design rights to the family of pigs.

Paul Cardew is now producing a special edition of 2500 Sunshine sets of the family all with silver decoration to ties, bags etc. The sets will be hand made at the Bovey Tracey factory in Devon and each set will have its own limited edition number, back stamp, silver stopper and a certificate of authenticity.

In addition, a brand new member of the family has been introduced and she will be included in the special edition sets. Her name is Beatrice and she is the niece of Hillary and Sir Nathaniel.

Sets are available from the 1 November on the official website www.cardewclub.com or from the pottery itself. You can also see the sets being hand made at the factory from the 1st December; exactly 25 years after the original sets were first produced.

In March 2007 to mark a new childrens savings scheme “Paint your own Piggybanks” were issued.

There was an undecorated footballer or fairy pig and the gift set contained everything necessary to decorate the piggybank.

Additionally 25 finished glossy pigs were given to NatWest and Cardew staff who worked on the promotion

The result was a cricketer pig that came in the full Natwest strip worn by the cricket team and there were only 500 of these new pigs manufactured to give away as competition prizes to the public.
